SWG-FIRST154 S18 and S21 are the latest additions to SHIMA SEIKI’s SWG-FIRST premium computerized flat knitting machine series. A synthesis of all of SHIMA SEIKI’s experience and know-how, "FIRST" continues to provide a tremendous range of knitting from full-fashioning, rib shaping and integral knitting to 3-dimensional shaping as well as WHOLEGARMENT production. This all-purpose capability is made possible by carrying over our revolutionary SlideNeedle, which, together with loop pressers and transfer jacks, offers remarkable variety as well as improved quality and productivity. For SWG-FIRST154 S21, a special ultrafine gauge version of the SlideNeedle is used for knitting fabrics in 21-gauge, currently the world’s finest gauge possible in shaped knitting. SWG-FIRST154 is also updated with SHIMA SEIKI’s new R2CARRIAGE system that performs quicker carriage returns for significantly higher efficiency and productivity. The new SWG-FIRST series expands the boundaries of flat knitting with the speed and capability to produce garments that were previously impossible to produce.

R2CARRIAGE

The R2CARRIAGE(R2=Rapid Response) System features an advanced carriage mechanism combined with improved software programming that achieves quicker carriage returns after each course. For a given knitting width, a larger and heavier carriage requires more space (B) at each end of the machine to decelerate, return and accelerate back up to speed, so the actual portion where the carriage runs at full speed (A) becomes very limited. With a compact, lightweight carriage, less space is required for the carriage to make returns, allowing more area for the carriage to run at full speed. This allows faster knitting per course, resulting in higher productivity.

i-DSCS+DTC

i-DSCS

Standard on SWG-FIRST154 is i-DSCS+DTC Digital Stitch Control System "with Intelligence" and Dynamic Tension Control. i-DSCS+DTC carries over the benefits of DSCS while achieving the ultimate performance in digital knitting. Whereas DSCS is a passive system which controls stitch length by mechanically limiting yarn-feed, i-DSCS+DTC has the capability to actively control yarn-feed in both feed and retrieval directions as necessary, through variable electronic control of yarn tension. These result in even higher quality and greater productivity using a wider variety of yarns, including high-speed knitting of challenging yarns such as fancy yarns, stretch yarns, slub yarns and delicate cashmeres. Precise electronic control means i-DSCS+DTC provides consistent quality among different machines, production batches and repeat orders, and is crucial to the precision knitting required in WHOLEGARMENT production.

SlideNeedle

SHIMA SEIKI has reinvented the most basic element of knitting-the needle. The new SlideNeedle is the result of a thorough re-evaluation of the 150-year old design of the conventional latch needle, and offers knitting possibilities never imagined before. A flexible two-piece slider mechanism splits and extends beyond the needle hook for increased potential especially in complex transfers. Using the slider mechanism for transfer effectively eliminates the transfer clip, allowing the needle to be mounted in the center of the needle groove. SlideNeedle thereby achieves perfectly symmetrical loop formation for knitting the highest possible quality fabrics.

SWG-FIRST154's computer-controlled takedown system consists of front and rear panels over which tiny pins are distributed for separately controlling takedown tension for the front and back when knitting WHOLEGARMENT. In addition, each panel is separated into sections which can be individually controlled for specific tension control across the entire width of the garment. This precise control over takedown tension permits three-dimensional shaping of WHOLEGARMENT items-for example, by allowing shoulder lines for set-in sleeves to be positioned over the shoulder toward the back-resulting in a more dimensionally accurate garment which conforms better to the shape of the torso.

Unlike conventional knotter systems which mechanically tie together yarn ends, the Air Splicer cuts then twists together yarns with a burst of pressurized air with split-second accuracy. Working in precise coordination with i-DSCS+DTC, the Air Splicer is able to time each splice so that perfect color changes can occur exactly as programmed. With the Air Splicer, high-quality multi-color WHOLEGARMENT knitwear can be produced easily and with beautiful results.

Additional improvements include a new control unit that is built-in to the machine for simplified shipping and installation, easier maintenance, and more efficient use of space. A USB memory interface and a backup power supply are standard. The new machines also feature a lower overall height for improved access to top tension units.
